Meet Dr. Hollis Helms

Whatever Dr. Helms does, he is firm, positive and enthusiastic in his approach. A native of Texas, Dr. Helms received his primary and secondary education at Amarillo Christian Schools. He received his pre-chiropractic training at Lubbock Christian University. After graduating from Texas Chiropractic College, he interned at the famed T.C.C. Clinic in Houston, receiving his license to practice in Texas in 1987.

Dr. Helms constantly strives to improve and update his knowledge in the field of chiropractic and has completed extensive study in Texas Chiropractic College post-graduate programs.

Dr. Helms is a member of the prestigious American Chiropractic Association, The Texas Chiropractic Association, and the Texas Chiropractic College Alumni Association. Dr. Helms is licensed by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners, and the Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners and serves as a Designated Doctor for the Texas Workers Compensation Commission.

As well as appearing on radio and television, Dr. Helms wrote a monthly column on sports injuries for a popular ski magazine. Dr. Helms has been in active practice since 1987 at the Thousand Oaks location.

Dr. Helms has called San Antonio home for their past seventeen years, and enjoys golf, scuba diving, aviation, the outdoors and spending time with his family.

I am locally famous, you could say. Hundreds of people know me here in San Antonio. But, I didn't get "famous" the way most people do. It was a "fool stunt," as some friends said. Let me tell you what happened.

It was twenty-five years ago, in 1982, when by the measure of most, I had everything.

Back then I was a pre-med student and I loved competitive tennis. I wasn't the best, but tennis was a great source of joy and helped me survive the high stress of school. I suddenly developed severe hip pain and right leg pain. I couldn't even run around the block. My doctor prescribed pain killers and muscle relaxers. Nothing was working. I was afraid something horrible was wrong! I was devastated and scared that my active days were over for good. But there's more.

A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor did an exam, took some films, and then "adjusted" my spine. The adjustment didn't hurt, it actually felt good. I got relief, and I could run again. That's when I told my family and friends that I was changing careers and heading for chiropractic school myself. They said it was a "fool stunt", that I was crazy to spend the time and money. But, I never looked back. It was the best decision that I ever made!

It's strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their hip and leg pain.
